Nobody learns a language from a textbook on holiday. But everybody learns the words for "your turn", "I win" and "you are cheating" within about ten minutes of sitting down to play cards, and those stick. We play with the Spanish deck — oros, copas, espadas, bastos, the one with no 8s and no 9s — and we start with brisca, which takes four minutes to explain and a lifetime to stop arguing about. Then tute if the group is up for it. The whole thing runs in Spanish as far as you can follow, and I drop into English exactly as much as needed and no more. You need no Spanish at all to come. Complete beginners spend the first half hour mostly listening and by the end are calling the cards out loud, because you cannot play without saying the words. Bring a drink, sit on the bay, and leave with a real card game and a hundred words you did not have to memorise.
